The town
of Kikinda is situated in the north of Banat, 7,5 km from
the Rumanian border. We don't know much about its origin,
the stories are very contradictionary since there are two
sources - the Hungarian source and the Serbian one.

However, all
of them agree that the locality of Kikinda was mentioned in
documents for the first time at the beginning of XV century,
probably as a group of small settlements and properties of the
Hungarian and the Serbian feudal lords. |
There are a lot of theories regarding
the name of the town. The experts have used historical, phonetic
and etymology methods, trying to explain its origin. So, the
name has been associated with near hummock which is named Kindja,
the turkish word "ikindija" or the family name Kandelac.

Current theories explain the
name of the town connecting it with phonetic and etymology
Old Slavic toponyms of this area, for example the root of
the word "kik" and others.
Today Kikida is administrative, economic and cultural centre
of the region of the north Banat.
